The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the nation’s leading medical research agency and the primary Federal agency whose mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability, conducting, supporting and making medical discoveries that improve people’s health and save lives. Launched in April 2018, the NIH HEAL (Helping to End Addiction Long-term) Initiative is a trans-NIH effort to advance national priorities in addressing the opioid crisis through science. As part of the initiative, NIH developed a plan to bolster research to enhance pain management strategies and improve treatments for opioid misuse and addiction. With HEAL support, the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) is providing a suite of translational science resources and expertise to investigators working on opioid and pain research. NCATS strives to be at the leading edge of technology in order to advance translational science. NCTAS applies high-throughput screening and discovery to the development of small molecule chemical probes, for use in the study of protein and cell functions, and biological processes relevant to physiology and disease.
To establish the cell-based assays for high-throughput screening, appropriate cells are needed. Rat dorsal root ganglion (DRG) cells were determined to be comparable to human DRG neurons and contain the machinery for the specific mechanism the project focuses on.
The vendor will provide the following:
1. 25 vials of rat dorsal root ganglion neurons each containing 1 million cells.
