Title: Iron-Rhodium sputtering target
- Background Information and Objective: The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), Functional and Molecular Imaging Section has long been interested in tracking of individual cells with MRI using micron-scale magnetic particles. One of the problems with using magnetic particles has been that it is sometimes difficult to tell them apart from endogenous objects in the body such as blood vessels. Using particles made from a switchable MRI contrast agents would allow us to distinguish between such objects and our particles.
There has been some success demonstrating a bulk version of this experiment, using large 0.25-1 millimeter particles, showing the large magnetic moment change in response to a temperature change while in an MRI magnet. NINDS Investigators are now looking to develop the material into smaller particles around 1 um in diameter. Towards this end, NINDS is collaborating with an expert in making FeRh thin films, which has already shown that these films work with a prototype sample. NINDS would like to continue this work and develop the thin film approach into a method for generating suitable particles (i.e. growing thicker films and then cutting/etching into smaller pieces using microfabrication techniques), as its investigators have done with pure iron particles. As such, NINDS requires a sputtering target to be used as the raw material for making the films. This product is to be used for making thin films approaching cell size (10 micrometer diameter or less) of Iron-Rhodium, a magnetocaloric material which has potential as a switchable MRI contrast agent.
