Single-Sole Source Determination
This new micromanipulator is ordered to replace our old equipment. The Luigs & Neumann micromanipulators has been used for 15 years in six electrophysiology setups in our lab. It meet our basic needs well. All our lab members have been trained to use this micromanipulator. The training process is very long. It normally takes 6 months to train people to use a micromanipulator. Change to micromanipulator from other company is really not cost effective. Another reason is that only the micromanipulator from the same vendor is compatible with existing equipment, and we can easily swap the parts if we have problem later.
Background/Description of Requirement

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the nation’s leading medical research agency and the primary Federal agency conducting and supporting medical discoveries that improve people’s health and save lives.  The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about the brain and nervous system and to use that knowledge to reduce the burden of neurological disease.

Our brain functions are based on the synaptic transmission between millions of neurons. Our goal is to understand the molecular mechanism of synaptic transmission in physiological and pathological conditions. Our study may provide the information to prevent and treat the popular neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease. We study the molecular mechanism of the SNARE complex formation and interaction in the adrenal gland. The insights gained from the new micromanipulator which facilitate the electrophysiology experiment will benefit the exocytosis research field and the synaptic transmission field.
