Single-Sole Source Determination
The Argon laser and the optical fiber are the unique replacement of the existing broken on the Leica TCS SP5II system, which are not available in competing systems. Leica is the sole provider because Argon laser from other companies are not compatible to the Leica microscope and software system.
The total of the sales price is $20,333, while the price for NIH is $17,283.05. That includes a discount of 15%. The price is reasonable for an imaging system of good quality which provides these functions.
We also searched for other vendors manufacturing or providing these technologies but found no vendors supplying the same or similar products for the Leica SP5 system.
Background/Description of Requirement

Synaptic vesicle endocytosis retrieves fused vesicles from the plasma membrane to sustain synaptic transmission, which is essential for cell functioning. This Argon laser replacement is necessary to obtain multi-color imaging of exocytic and endocytic events. Our lab needs this Argon laser to continue our studies as the existing Argon laser is broken and no longer functioning. The laser replacement allows us to produce the data of our current work.
