Single-Sole Source Determination
The Solid State 448 and 514 nm lasers are the unique upgrade of the existing the Leica TCS SP8 system, which are not available in competing systems. Leica is the sole provider because the Solid State 448 and 514 nm laser from other companies are not compatible to the Leica microscope and software system.
The total of the sales price is $19,646.63. The price is reasonable for an imaging system of good quality which provides these functions.
We also searched for other vendors manufacturing or providing these technologies but found no vendors supplying the same or similar products for the Leica SP8 system.

Background/Description of Requirement

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the nation’s leading medical research agency and the primary Federal agency conducting and supporting medical discoveries that improve people’s health and save lives.  The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about the brain and nervous system and to use that knowledge to reduce the burden of neurological disease.

Our brain functions are based on the synaptic transmission between millions of neurons. Our goal is to understand the molecular mechanism of synaptic transmission in physiological and pathological conditions. Our study may provide the information to prevent and treat the popular neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease. We study the molecular mechanism of the SNARE complex formation and interaction in the adrenal gland. The insights gained from the upgrading of Leica Confocal system will benefit the exocytosis research field and the synaptic transmission field
