A major goal of the research performed by the lab is to understand communication between the neocortex and cerebellum while animals learn novel behavioral skills over weeks. The lab measures activity in both cortex and cerebellum simultaneously using a custom dual-site two-photon microscope, across multiple genetically defined populations using dual-wavelength two-color imaging, and by combining imaging of one neural population with stimulation of another. An essential component of this is a means to precisely and rapidly position the animal under the microscope to target a specific small patch of brain tissue, achieved via digital translation stages with high accuracy, long travel to accommodate a variety of multi-site configurations, and high load capacity to translate an entire behavioral platform.
