Single-Sole Source Determination
In current years our lab works a lot on determining how axonal transport and mitochondria integrity may affect neuronal function, which directly correlated with massive neuron degeneration and regeneration process. To evaluate these changes in the specific brain or spinal cord areas, drugs and/or viruses are delivered locally to investigate the region-specific effects of these reagents or specific genes. Stereotaxic surgery is a minimally invasive form of surgical intervention that uses a three-dimensional coordinate system to locate small targets (Xiong et al, Mol Psychiatry, 2021, Chamberlain et al, Neuron 2022). These directions are continued in our lab, and similar experiments are proposed in several new projects, including but not limited to:
1) injecting drugs and viruses to the hippocampus to investigate how syntaphilin gene expression may affect adult neurogenesis.
2) injecting drugs and viruses to the spinal cord to investigate how local mitochondria function may affect neuron regeneration after damage.
3) injecting drugs and virus to striatum to investigate how local axon degeneration may affect dopaminergic signal transduction in Parkinson’s disease.
Background/Description of Requirement

Our lab is planning to extend our study to elucidate how dysfunction of axonal transport influence neuronal function, and how these changes play a role in neurodegenerative diseases. We are pursuing a stereotaxic injector system that could deliver drugs and viruses to specific brain or spinal cord locations.
