Background/Description of Requirement

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the top federal agency doing and funding medical research in the US, leading to medical advancements that improve people's health and save lives. The objective of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) is to find out as much as possible about the brain and nervous system in order to lessen the burden of neurological disease.

The synaptic communication between the millions of neurons in our brain is what allows it to work. Understanding the chemical basis of synaptic transmission under normal and abnormal circumstances is our aim. Our research could help in the diagnosis and treatment of prevalent neurological conditions like Alzheimer's disease. We investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying SNARE complex formation and interaction in cultured neurons from the hippocampus and adrenal medulla.

An effective micrimanipulator is a crucial piece of kit for our investigation. Without it, the electrophysiological experiment would be impossible for us to do. The fields of synaptic transmission and exocytosis research will both benefit from a quality micromanufacturer.
