The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) is a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), conducting research into the causes, treatment, and prevention of neurological disorders and stroke. The Experimental Immunotherapeutics Unit (EIU) runs a clinical research program in progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, an opportunisitic infection of the brain for which there is no cure. As part of the program, the EIU conducts several research protocols, including a natural history study and interventional studies; biological samples, specifically isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cells and cerebrospinal fluid, are of great importance for characterizing clinical course and response to treatment.
