Leica VT1200 S Fully Automated Vibrating Blade Microtome
Rationale/ Salient Characteristics
(1) A fully automated vibrating blade microtome with programmable slicing protocol to maintain the consistency and the efficiency of slice cutting. (2) An autoclavable buffer tray and specimen disc to reduce the contamination of slices. (3) Magnetic specimen holders that support easy specimen handling and reproducible orientation. (4) Two blade holders for double edged razor, injector or sapphire blades to ensure safe blade handling and avoid contamination of specimens. (5) 1-1000 µm range of sectioning thickness and 33mm × 50mm maximum specimen size to ensure flexible sectioning protocols according to different brain areas, species (especially mice and rats), and various experimental needs.
Background/Description of Requirement

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) is establishing a new laboratory: The Spatial Navigation and Memory Unit (SNMU). The laboratory will use cutting-edge imaging and behavioral approaches to investigate the neural basis of spatial navigation and memory at the circuit, synaptic, molecular and cellular levels. This laboratory requires one vibrating microtome, which will be used to cut acute brain slices, as well as slices of fixed brain tissue. The slices will be used for electrophysiology or immunohistochemistry.
