A major goal of the research performed by the lab is to understand communication between the neocortex and cerebellum while animals learn novel behavioral skills over weeks. The lab measures activity in both cortex and cerebellum simultaneously using a custom dual-site two-photon microscope, across multiple genetically defined populations using dual-wavelength two-color imaging, and by combining imaging of one neural population with stimulation of another. Such imaging requires a functioning two photon laser.
During the winter holiday of FY23, a flooding occurred in the building and the laser was damaged as a result. the requirement it to bring the laser back to advertised performance characteristics in order to continue the research study supporting the mission of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) within the National Institute of Health (NIH).
