Background/Description of Requirement

The mission of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is to pursue fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and their applications. In addition to enhancing health, extending life, reducing illness and disability, and conducting, supporting, and making medical discoveries that enhance and save people's health and lives, the mission of the NIH also includes extending life and reducing illness and disability.

In order to observe a stable electrophysiological system, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) routinely employs an air table. This allows researchers to perform patch-clamp recordings on in vivo and in vitro slices or cells for electrophysiological studies. During the clamp patch, precise stabilization and related maintenance are required to keep neurons alive and healthy.

This requirement seeks to acquire an air table that will allow researchers to detect the electrophysiological signal which are used in the electrophysiological experiments. The air table is essential for stabilize the whole electrophysiological system during the patch clamp and it request the nitrogen pressure stabilization and maintenance is restricted. The stability of  the air table is the key point during the in vitro and in vivo electrophysiological experiments.
