Lysosomes play a key role in the metabolism of the cell and have been implicated in numerous lysosomal storage disorders as well as broader systemic diseases such as cancer and diabetes. NINDS research lab studies a lysosomal transporter protein, ClC-7. NINDS researchers recently found that mutations in ClC-7 that cause a gain-of-function phenotype cause a broad multisystem disease characterized by neurological delayed development, hypotonia, organomegaly, and albinism, which is the loss of colored pigment in the skin. NINDS researchers are in the process of developing mouse models of this disease to use in studying the nature of the defects caused and for developing therapies for affected patients. Since NINDS researchers expect there to be changes in the pigmentation of the skin and fur of these mice, NINDS researchers need a method to accurately, quantitatively and reproducibly characterize the color of the mice.
The requirement is for a handheld spectrophotometer to quantitatively determine the color of a solid object. The instrument must be able to be held up to the skin of a mouse for this determination and to rapidly return results in a variety of color spaces and also to determine a reflectance spectrum over the entire visible range. The device must be capable of downloading color data to a computer and we also require computer software to allow download of the data and further analysis.
