Biopac manufactures MRI-compatible hardware for the monitoring of human subject physiology in an MRI environment. Several of these systems are present in the NIH MRI research facility in building 10, so we have the tools in place to use the data acquired with these systems in conjunction with the MRI data, e.g. for physiological noise correction.
Background/Description of Requirement

Statement of Need and Purpose: The purpose of this request is to obtain a physiological monitoring setup, which will be used for the acquisition of Photoplethysmography (PPG) – which is a measurement of pulse from fingertip, respiratory and temperature data, as well as temperature, from human subjects while undergoing a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan.

Background Information and Objective: The Advanced MRI section of Laboratory of Functional and Molecular MRI (LFMI) within the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) develops cutting-edge hard- and software to improve MRI technology and applies this to advance neuro- and functional imaging of the human brain. Main avenues of research in the lab are the study of human brain at high field to quantify brain iron and myelin, the development of improved functional MRI techniques, and the study of human sleep. All of these experiments are performed on human subjects, whose physiology needs to be monitored to allow us to compensate for physiology-induced signal fluctuations in our data.

Generic Name of Product:  MP160 data acquisition system.

Purchase Description: This purchase is for the acquisition of a Biopac MP160 data acquisition system with the required software licenses, as well as modules to acquire the following signals: PPG; respiration; skin temperature; MRI triggers. All of these modules need to be MRI compatible since they will be used in an MRI environment, during MRI scans, and cables need to include the required filters to prevent the injection of noise into the MRI acquisition.
