Background/Description of Requirement
  1. Statement of Need and Purpose:

The Cellular Neurophysiology Section’s research studies show that SNc dopamine neurons are differentiated from other less vulnerable neurons based on their intracellular calcium dynamics. Because of this, the Cellular Neurophysiology Section designs experiments to compare calcium dynamics between different dopamine neuron subpopulations. To perform these experiments, the Section requires a high-resolution, high-sensitivity, digital CMOS camera that is brand name or equal to Hamamatsu’s ORCA-Fusion BT digital CMOS camera, to perform high resolution, low light imaging of either calcium-sensitive or voltage-sensitive dyes or proteins.  The Section also requires a CoaXpress board and cable (or equal high-speed interface cable) to enable fast transfer between the ORCA-Fusion camera and computer.

  1. Background Information and Objective:

The Cellular Neurophysiology Section of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) performs research focusing on circuit and cellular physiology of dopaminergic neurons located in the midbrain. In particular, the Section seeks to understand excitability and firing patterns of dopaminergic neurons located in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc), neurons that undergo selective cell death in Parkinson’s disease patients.
