To continue our onging work in which we try to understand the functional and genetic interaction of cortical neruons, we use the non-freezing, automated vibration-based microtome using blade. Our previous VT1200 has been broken and this new purchase is to replace the old one.

Single-Sole Source Determination
Leica VT1200 listed herein is available from only one source, and competition is precluded for the reasons indicated below. There are no substitutes available.

This acquisition is restricted to Government Scientific Source, Inc. Small Business
12355 Sunrise Valley Dr. Suite 400, Reston, Virginia 20191.

Brand-name or Items peculiar to one manufacturer:
The essential characteristics of the Leica VT1200 that limit the availability to a sole source are
- Semiautomatic Vibrating Blade Microtome for sectioning fixed and unfixed specimens from Neuropathology, Neurophysiology (Patch clamping), Botany (roots and parts of plants) and Industry (foams).
- Robust and stabile basic instrument with blade holder for safe insertion of the whole razor blade and adjustment screw to minimize the vertical deflection of the blade below 1 μm. Separate control panel - foil protected.
- Adjustment screw for manual feeding prior to each section (semiautomatic cutting mode).
- Support for removable ice tray, double walled buffer tray or optional measurement device "Vibrocheck", for vertical deflection of the blade.
- Technical specifications:
-Vertical specimen feed: max. 20 mm (depending on selected specimen holder)
-Horizontal stroke: 45 mm
-Blade holder turnable by 90° for safe blade insertion of whole razor-injector or sapphire
blades. Clearance angle adjustment of 15°, 18° or 21°. Optimized blade holder design for minimised buffer spillage.
-Separate control panel - foil protected
-Parameter setting for speed, amplitude, section thickness (semiautomatic mode).

Only this suggested source can furnish the requirements, to the exclusion of other sources, because the precision that is describe above with freezing tissue is not available beside this product.

The new items are "direct replacement" parts / components for existing equipment.

Background/Description of Requirement

Leica VT1200 - Configuration

with blade holder, ice tray, buffer tray - metal,

and specimen disc

Instrument features:

Semiautomatic Vibrating Blade Microtome for sectioning fixed and unfixed specimens from Neuropathology, Neurophysiology (Patch clamping), Botany (roots and parts of plants) and Industry (foams).

Robust and stabile basic instrument with blade holder for safe insertion of the whole razor blade and adjustment screw to minimize the vertical deflection of the blade below 1 μm. Separate control panel - foil protected. Adjustment screw for manual feeding prior to each section (semiautomatic cutting mode).

Support for removable ice tray, double walled buffer tray or optional measurement device "Vibrocheck", for vertical deflection of the blade.

Technical specifications:

-Vertical specimen feed: max. 20 mm (depending on selected specimen holder)

-Horizontal stroke: 45 mm

-Blade holder turnable by 90° for safe blade insertion of whole razor-injector or sapphire

blades. Clearance angle adjustment of 15°, 18° or 21°. Optimized blade holder design for

minimised buffer spillage.

-Separate control panel - foil protected

-Parameter setting for speed, amplitude, section thickness (semiautomatic mode

-Display for vertical blade deflection value (in μm) and indication of screw turn direction

to minimise the vertical blade deflection when using measurement device "Vibrocheck"

-Motorized blade holder vibration with minimal vertical blade deflection (value measurable

by optional measurement device "Vibrocheck". Value can be minimised by using adjustment screw on blade holder).

-Motorised blade holder travel speed adjustable between 0.01 - 1.5 mm/s in:

-0.01 - 0.1 in 0.01 mm/s steps

-0.1 - 0.5 in 0.02 mm/s steps

-0.5 - 1.5 in 0.1 mm/s steps

-Accelerated motorised blade return travel speed of 2.5 mm/s

-Manual blade forward and return speed of 1.5 mm/s

-Amplitude adjustment: 0-3 mm in 0.05 mm steps

-Frequency: 85 Hz +/- 5 Hz

-"Up" button for fast approach of the specimen to the blade

-"Down" button for fast approach of the home position for safe and fast specimen change

-Adjustment screw for manual feeding prior to each section

-Adjustable step sizes for manual feeding: 1, 10 or 100 μm

-Memo button to save selected section thickness

-Section thickness totalizer, re-settable at any position

-Integrated LED illumination

-Adapter for magnifier or microscope carrier

-Removable ice tray, drawer principle, allows preparation of the tissue under the microscope

with integrated palm rests with magnets to hold buffer tray in place

-Buffer tray (plastics) with lid to cover up buffer tray while filling ice tray, magnet to

hold specimen disc in place, specimen disc -non-orienting and clamp to hold tube in buffer

during oxygenation.
