Background: Cannabis and associated with it disorders are not deadly for male and female users but can bring much harm that can be expressed in Years of healthy Life lost due to Disability (YLD). Looking thru national and subnational statistics we can say that Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALY) from cannabis disorders is equal to YLD. The Global Burden of Diseases Study (GBD) provides the best instruments through which global, regional, and national progress toward achieving cannabis-related harm can be assessed.
Methods: We used Global Burden of Disease study estimates cannabis use disorders YLDs rate per 100k calculated from modeling by the disability weight. The burden of living with a disease or disability is calculated by the years lost due to disability (YLD) observed from comorbidity coming from cannabis smoke or another way of use. Cannabis use disorders prevalence and burden estimates were stratified by, sex and country’s SDI (Sustainable Development Index) in the last available year in GBD research 2017.
Results: On the global level cannabis use disorders brings 8.95 (5.67 – 13.29) accounted YLDs for males population and 4.58 (2.90 – 6.76) from females in 2017 thus, males has higher harm on 49% over the observed period. The main impact in super-regions divided by SDI comes from high SDI countries 17.43 (11.01 – 25.74) YLDs by males and 9.77 (6.14 – 14.25) by females with difference on 44% higher for males. High-middle SDI countries demonstrate 7.89 (4.95 – 11.70) YLDs in males and 4.65 (2.93 – 6.93) in females, that gives 41% higher harm for males. Middle-SDI countries have 8.03 (5.10 – 11.94) YLDs for males and 4.21 (2.69 – 6.23) in females that 48% higher for males. Low-middle SDI countries brings 7.22 (4.52 – 10.79) YLDs for males and 2.78 (1.76 – 4.08) in females that 62% more for males indicator. Low SDI countries demonstrate 6.58 (4.15 – 9.79) YLDs by males and 2.78 (1.73 – 4.11) for females, that 58% higher for males.
Conclusion: Cannabis use disorders brings 49% more harm for males than females on global level and from 44 to 62% more YLDs in every stratified by SDI super-regions. Than higher SDI by surer-region than more YLDs they demonstrate. High SDI countries have 2.7 times higher harm out of cannabis disorders for males from low SDI countries and 3.5 times higher for females in same SDI level countries.
