This is the lowest risk category, for those patients who report no substance use and may therefore be at minimal current risk for adverse outcomes associated with substance use. Exercise clinical judgment for patients with depression, ADHD, or other psychiatric disorders who do not report any past 12 months use, as they are at an increased risk for development of substance use problems and may benefit from closer monitoring.
The recommended action for this result is to deliver a prevention message to continue abstinence. This is especially relevant for young adults and patients with medical conditions that may be worsened by substance use.
- Give positive reinforcement for abstinence.
- Personalize the prevention message as much as possible. For example, for patients with depression, discuss the link between substance use and depressive symptoms.
