This requirement is restricted to MATLAB and its associated toolboxes brand-name licenses. While MATLAB was developed by The MathWorks, Inc., there may be other distributors capable of providing MATLAB software service contracts. MATLAB service contracts will ensure continued support for MATLAB-based programs central to the MRI Section’s research while providing enhanced capabilities needed for the ongoing development of work on MRI data processing and image analysis.

Furthermore, if another software were purchased from a different vendor, there would be a disruption of service across the MRI Section's lab where the software and toolboxes would need to be uninstalled and the new software and toolboxes installed. Staff training would be required, and there is the risk of existing data becoming unusable with new software.

Continuation of these software and toolbox licenses allows uninterrupted access to MATLAB. Renewal of these software licenses and associated toolboxes is critical to the continuation of research within the MRI Section. It is for these reasons, this requirement is restricted to MATLAB brand-name licenses.
Background/Description of Requirement

The LCI MRI Section (MRISS) develops, tests and applies magnetic resonance (MR) imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy (NMR) techniques to the study of normal brain aging and age-related pathologies. In addition, this lab collaborates with the newly-established LCI/MRPAD unit, the 3T MRI clinical research facility at Harbor Hospital and researchers in the Translational Gerontology Branch (TGB), Laboratory of Cardiovascular Science (LCS) and Laboratory of Molecular Genetics (LMG) to support their studies of demyelination, body composition changes, liver steatosis and associated treatments in human subjects and aging rodent models. MATLAB software is used in this work to simulate various MR pulse sequences, to process imaging and spectroscopy data acquired on our scanners and to provide statistical analysis of the resulting measurements. MATLAB licenses are assigned to individual users in MRISS, MRPAD and LCS (for remote access via VPN) as well as to shared computers in the various MR laboratories.

The MATLAB software licenses along with their associated add-on toolboxes are due to expire. Renewal of these software licenses and associated toolboxes is critical to the continuation of research within the MRI Section. The contractor will provide unlimited technical support for MATLAB and its installed toolboxes via phone, E-mail, and its web site. The contractor will provide software updates and technical support for all specified MATLAB software for one year under the Software Maintenance Service.
