This acquisition is for a high performance digital camera system to be used as part of a two-color fluorescence microscope. When built, this microscope will be capable of whole-animal imaging of neuronal activity and will be used to characterize brain circuits underlying behavior in the fruit fly.
The recent development of genetic tools for monitoring neuronal activity coupled with new methods of fluorescence microscopy have made it possible to monitor the activity of brain cells throughout a living nervous system. This methodology requires special microscopes that are capable of collecting images of neuronal and muscle activity at high speed over large areas. These high-performance digital cameras are an essential element of a wide-field microscope that will be built to conduct imaging experiments of this sort.
