Rationale/ Salient Characteristics
o The robotic device should be compact. The overall dimension should be not more than 15.4 x19.8 x 18.5 (W x D x H) inches.
o The robot must access any arbitrary location using the robot arm within the domain of operation.
o The robot must be able to move in three dimensional with precision less than 0.1 mm.
o The robot must come with liquid handling capability with maximum volume of 10 mL
o The robotic needle must be able to penetrate through a septum ( 2 to 3 mm thick silicon septum must be punctured by the robot).
o The robot must be relatively immune from the radiation exposure.
o The robot must be programmable by a customer.
o The robot must be immune to high amount of 511 KeV gamma radiation.
o The GX241 can pierce septum ( 1.5 mm thick silicon) and transfer liquid from vial to an injection port. The robot arm needle must be used to move sliding block to transport a 1.0 mL v-vial to an oven.
o The robot arm needle must be able to drag an block made of Plexiglas using a hole ( ca. 2mm in diameter) on the block.
o The robot arm needle must be move with 0.1 mm precision.
o The dimension of the robot must be small enough to be placed inside the hot cell. The dimension of GX 241 is 15.4 x19.8 x 18.5 (W x D xH) inches as specified in SS which is an essential characteristics and advantage of this product over other liquid handlers..
o The robot must go to any arbitrary position specified by the software. The position of the robot must be read and reported back to the software. The speed of the robot movement must be controlled by software and must be variable by user software. The robot must be disabled and unpowered when user software request such operation
o User must be able to adjust speed of the syringe pump.
o The three way valve on the syringe pump must report the position of the valve to the user software.
o User must be able to specify the volume to be pulled up , which is ranging from 0 to 10 mL.
Single-Sole Source Determination
The product, GX 241 has the dimension of 15.4 x19.8 x 18.5 (W x D xH) inches which is essential to use in small confined space of the radiochemistry lab. The product has a septum piercing needle which can penetrate though the Teflon coated silicon septuom, which is 1.5 mm in thickness.

The GXI 241 is closely related product to the previous obsolete Gilson 233 Xli. The function of the robot arm has almost identical or very similar, The instruction set are very similar to the legacy device, 233 Xli. Therefore, NIMH needs least efforts to replace the legacy robotic system.

PRSS MIB NIMH succeeded in incorporating Gilson GX 241 into the AutoRad system in CGMP laboratory and the compactness of this robotic device proved to be ideal for radiochemical synthesis apparatus. Therefore, we want to use it for the new research hot cells that will be built in 2022. The primary mission of NIMH PET Radiopharmaceutical Science Section is to produce PET ligands for brain imaging and we do not want to delve into figuring out how to communicate a host of possible robot arm devices in the commercial market. We have successfully incorporated a commercial robotic system into Autorad and in a similar manner we would like to achieve this by using the device resembling its predecessor, now obsolete Aspec Xli 233. NIMH has been using the legacy robot for 10 years, which now became obsolete. NIMH PET radiochemistry group successfully incorporated the new model, GX241 in the new CGMP lab.
Background/Description of Requirement
A tracer was produced using this robotic liquid handler, GX 241 in CGMP hot cell and this device is being used everyday currently. The PET Radiopharmaceutical Sciences Section of Molecular Imaging Branch (PRSS/MIB) has used two units of Gilson Alspec XLI for the last 18 years and two units of Gilson GX-241 for the last six years. We will want to use GX-241 in the new hot cells that is being built in 2021 and 2022. The new Gilson robot has demonstrated that it can performed many useful operations that radiochemists required in the lead shielded hot cell. It can add chemicals remotely and transfer radioactive chemicals from one location to another location. Therefore, the robotic device successfully protects radiochemist from getting unnecessary radiation exposure. The vendor will have to assist the installation of the device and modification of the device as soon as it is purchased by the government. The vendor and manufacturer shall provide its proprietary communication board for RS232 communication. Parameters for communication protocol for programmer should be provided as Gilson did in the past. Any updates in command list and change in communication parameters will be provided immediately.
