Rationale/ Salient Characteristics
The system will work in concert with other fMRI data collection and analysis equipment. It will collect accompanying data from extremeties, such as hemodynamic information that complements the fMRI data being collected. Analysis of this data will aid in ameliorating the effects of structured noise.
Background/Description of Requirement
The Section on Functional Imaging Methods is engaged in the development of Functional MRI methods development. Systematic physiological fluctuations are one of the confounding factors in this type of resarch. More particularly, recent SFIM work has demonstrated that systemic vascular fluctuations can lead to structured noise that complicates the interpretation of functional connectomes based on fMRI recordings. One way to model the undesired effects of such fluctuations is to acquire hemodynamic traces in peripheral locations (e.g., finger or toe) concurrently with fMRI data. This would require an MRI-compatible NIRS (Near Infrared spectroscopy).
