Single-Sole Source Determination
The essential characteristics of the LED arrays for optogenetic modulation in nonhuman primates that limit the availability to a sole source are: 1) curvature compatible with implantation over perirhinal cortex; 2) precise control and timing of power output; 3) embedded thermal sensor; 4) proven performance for safety in nonhuman primates; and 5) gas sterilizable. Only this suggested source can furnish the requirements, to the exclusion of other sources, because these LED arrays are entirely proprietary – developed in collaboration with our research group for this specific application. Blackrock Microsystems is the only licensed vendor of this product.

This vendor’s product is the only commercial product tested in nonhuman primates. If a competing product is brought to market, it would have to be tested in nonhuman primates before consideration. Through market research, we have found that no competing product or vendor exists.

Background/Description of Requirement
  1. The Laboratory of Neuropsychology (LN) in the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) investigates higher brain functions such as object recognition and reward-guided learning. The goal of this project is to investigate relationships between brain areas and behavior. This work will be used to understand the complex neural circuitry that primates use for detecting novelty. Such understanding is part of the mission of the NIMH. This work requires specific custom flexible LED arrays to manipulate neuronal activity in the nonhuman primate brain via optogenetic receptor activation.
