Background/Description of Requirement

Background Information and Objective:

The NIH/CC is a rotation site for the Medstar Georgetown University Hospital C-L psychiatry fellowship training program. The affiliation with MGUH and NIMH/Office of the Clinical Director(OCD) began in 2006. The goal of the program is to provide advanced psychiatry subspeciality medical education and training to fellows, at level PGY-5 and above. Fellows typically rotate four days per week for six consecutive months. They are fully credentialed and are involved mostly in clinical care of NIH Clinical Center (CC) patients.

Statement of Need and Purpose:

The fellow will perform clinical work and patient care in the context of medical training. The fellow will perform clinical care of NIH’s Clinical Center patients four days a week for a duration of six months as part of a 12-month subspecialty fellowship training program in Consultation-Liaison psychiatry in affiliation with the Medstar Georgetown University Hospital C-L Psychiatry fellowship training program.

Requirements:

The fellow will be expected to see NIH CC patients on a daily basis for the purposes of psychiatry consult requested by clinicians across various institutes. The fellow will perform diagnostic assessments, diagnoses, and provide treatment recommendations. In some cases, NIH CC patients may require follow up care and ongoing therapeutic services. Duties may include engaging with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate additional care in complex situations. The fellow should also manage all administrative duties for the psychiatry consultation-liaison service, including communicating with medical teams, scheduling appointments, performing timely medical documentation, providing ongoing psychiatric care where applicable and providing guidance for follow up care upon patient’s discharge from the CC. The fellow may participate in clinical research with appropriate IRB approval, though this is not mandatory. The fellow may participate in a scholarly activity, such as writing an article or case report/case series or doing a literature review or quality improvement project as part of the training experience. The fellow may participate in additional trainings, lectures or courses offered in the CC with the supervisor’s approval. The fellow may also engage in teaching, providing presentations or offer training to other NIH trainees or medical services.
