We have used MBF Bioscience Neurolucida software interfaced with Zeiss Microscopes and motor driven stages to develop the ability to image through every section of the mouse brains to provide a system-level analysis of neural circuit organization. The Neurolucida software interfaces with the camera, microscope and stage drive to acquire multiple fluorescent images at high resolution in a grid matrix that is assembled to provide a “seamless” montage image. Image data acquired and analyzed with this software is used in research publications from the Section (Gerfen et al., 2013, Hooks et al., 2018).

The fluorescence illumination system to be replaced is integral to the computer controlled microscope system that has been in use for 20 years. The software that controls the microscope is from MBF Bioscience and the fluorescence system must be adapted to be controlled by that software. As the software is proprietary to MBF they are the only company that made the necessary adaptations.

The existing software used on our microscope imaging systems is manufactured and distributed solely by MBF Bioscience and they are the only ones who can modify that software to provide the requested upgrades to the system.
Single-Sole Source Determination
It has been determined that the LED Illumination System X-CITE NOVEM-L controlled by MBF Neurolucida software listed herein is available from only one source, and competition is precluded for the reasons indicated below.

Background/Description of Requirement
  1. Statement of Need and Purpose:

The purpose of the acquisition is to replace and upgrade the fluorescence light system on a Zeiss Microscope system that is controlled by a Neurolucida program ( MBF Bioscience).  The existing is 10 years old and is failing and needs to be replaced.
