Single-Sole Source Determination
Leica is the only firm that manufactures and certifies replacement parts and that can provide updates to its scientific equipment and software. In order to comply with the warranty requirements, the required parts and supplies for the Leica Aperio Versa must be purchased from Leica. Furthermore, replacement parts or accessories must also be compatible with the existing Leica Aperio Versa (Serial Number 500058) equipment. Finally, because the Leica Aperio Versa is a highly sensitive and complex comprehensive digital pathology scanner for visualizing engineered tissues, it requires expert maintenance and repair by engineers who have received specialized training and have access to the patented and proprietary details of this scientific instrument. Manufacturer training is only provided for Leica Engineers; therefore, no third parties are permitted to service the equipment.
Background/Description of Requirement

The purpose of this acquisition is to acquire a service agreement (maintenance/repairs) for a Leica Aperio Versa digital pathology scanner. The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) Division of Preclinical Innovation (DPI) Tissue Bioprinting Laboratory (TBPL) provides NCATS investigators with access to a Leica Aperio Versa which is a comprehensive digital pathology scanner capable of visualizing engineered tissues. This Unit supports research resulting in high quality images on demand for tissue-based screening, disease model and assay development. The Leica Aperio Versa in this laboratory is a critical component in carrying out its mission, which builds on internal expertise at NCATS in assay development for drug screening, automation technologies, stem cell biology, tissue engineering and advanced high-content microscopy. Furthermore, the Leica Aperio Versa is utilized by NCATS in pursuit of their ongoing research projects. A service agreement allows for quick repair, if needed and regular maintenance and upgrading work to ensure continued use of the equipment which is required to perform at peak manufacturer’s standards.
