Molecular Devices, LLC Digidata 1550B1 Low Noise Data Acquisition system
Rationale/ Salient Characteristics
The brand-name item the Unit identified that meets the need of this procurement is Molecular Devices, LLC Digidata 1550B1 Low Noise Data Acquisition system (Part Numbers DIGIDATA 1550B1 and PCLAMP 11 STANDARD), which relies on imaging capabilities to study human stem cell-derived neurons.

The significant, essential physical, functional, performance, or material element(s) that are the Government’s minimum acceptable standards for an equivalent system to meet the government’s objective are as follows:

An equivalent high-precision low noise digitizer system shall:

• be able to sample at 500 kHz per channel.

• be able to digitize a wide range of input signals from -10 to +10V.

• have the capability to eliminate line-frequency noise that eliminates 50/60 Hz line-frequency noise pattern associated with high-frequency line harmonics.

• be compatible with pClamp 11 software that is used for acquisition of electrophysiology.

The high-precision low noise digitizer system shall be warranted, and the Contractor shall warrant its equipment against defects in material, fabrication, or workmanship for a minimum of one (1) year from the date of installation, inspection by the Government, and acceptance. Warranty shall not include routine or periodic maintenance services.
Background/Description of Requirement

The purpose of this requirement is to acquire Molecular Devices, LLC Digidata 1550B1 Low Noise Data Acquisition system or equal for the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), Neurovascular Research Unit. This electrophysiological equipment is used for examining the cellular excitability and ion channel distributions in the microvascular cells of the brain.

Background Information and Objective: The NINDS mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about the brain and nervous system and to use that knowledge to reduce the burden of neurological disease for all people.

Research in the NINDS Neurovascular Research Unit focuses on different neurovascular coupling mechanisms in control of the blood flow in the brain. This Unit also examines functional deficits in molecular mechanisms in the small vessel diseases of the brain and Vascular Cognitive Impairment & Dementia (VCID) including Stroke and Alzheimer’s disease. We rely on functional imaging approaches (in-vivo and ex-vivo) and electrophysiology to answer scientific questions.

To study the signaling properties of cells that comprise the neurovascular system, this laboratory uses patch clamp electrophysiology, which allows its researchers to perform precise measurements of ion channel activities in different vascular cells. To record the activity associated with individual ion channels, there is a need for a high-precision digitizer system for collecting data through the acquisition software pClamp11, which will allow the laboratory to accurately measure sub millivolt (very small) changes in the membrane potential of cells associates with individual ion channel activity.
