• The PHOTOBEAM ACTIVITY SYSTEM – HOME CAGE is the only system that can be expanded to 48 stations; 24 stations with rearing.
• The PHOTOBEAM ACTIVITY SYSTEM – HOME CAGE uses a USB interface allowing the system to be run from either a laptop or a desktop computer.
• The PHOTOBEAM ACTIVITY SYSTEM – HOME CAGE software provides Phasing allowing the software to be paused after a set time to allow the researcher to dose animals and then continue the test. This is a key feature in the software and in comparing this system to other systems this feature should be reviewed.
• The PHOTOBEAM ACTIVITY SYSTEM – HOME CAGE uses a Star wired schema from a central distribution box. If a cable to one test station is broken you only lose that one test station. This avoids the problem of daisy chained configurations seen in some systems that could lose all test stations beyond the station with the broken cable.
• The PHOTOBEAM ACTIVITY SYSTEM – HOME CAGE uses a Microsoft® Access database for data storage making the exporting of data to Excel and/or statistical packages a single step.
• The PHOTOBEAM ACTIVITY SYSTEM – HOME CAGE software provides X-Y position data, rearing counts (if installed), distance traveled, speed and resting time and intervals (aka: bins or time bins).
• The PHOTOBEAM ACTIVITY SYSTEM – HOME CAGE software assures data integrity by gathering a table of all beam breaks that occur during a session. This table can be used as a secondary validation of the data.
• The PHOTOBEAM ACTIVITY SYSTEM – HOME CAGE software provides the ability to display the animal track.
• The PHOTOBEAM ACTIVITY SYSTEM – HOME CAGE software can support unlimited user defined Zone Maps with the ability to apply multiple Zone Maps to a single animal track.
• The PHOTOBEAM ACTIVITY SYSTEM – HOME CAGE can handle many configurations and is customizable by simply changing the configuration file.
• The PHOTOBEAM ACTIVITY SYSTEM – HOME CAGE has infinitely adjustable frame heights without tools. In comparing other systems this key feature should be reviewed against systems with fixed holes in the vertical posts restricting the height options.
• The PHOTOBEAM ACTIVITY SYSTEM – HOME CAGE can be run for up to seven days, 24 hours per day without user intervention.

We routinely carry out activity monitoring on our mouse line as an evaluation of declining activity/mobility with advancement of disease progression or improvement with treatment. This set up allows for minimal calibration required between recordings. This equipment also allows for testing in the home cage which more accurately reflects of the true activity of the mouse.
