The present Intramural Research Program of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) began in the early 1950's with research programs in basic neuroscience, neurology and neurosurgery. Today investigators in the NINDS intramural research program (IRP) conduct research in the basic, translational, and clinical neurosciences at the NINDS Bethesda, Maryland laboratories. Their specific interests cover a broad range of neuroscience research including molecular biophysics, synapses and circuits, neuronal development, integrative neuroscience, brain imaging, neurological disorders and stroke. Through collaboration, pre- and postdoctoral training programs, jointly sponsored seminar series and special interest groups, NINDS investigators and investigators in other intramural programs form the Neuroscience @ NIH community and contribute to a vital and growing neuroscience research effort at the National Institutes of Health.
The NINDS IRP consists of a diverse group of approximately 50 independent principal investigators (PIs) conducting research in basic, translational and clinical neuroscience. The PIs supervise approximately 65 staff scientist and clinicians and over 250 trainees including graduate students and postdoctoral and clinical fellows. NINDS PIs are among the most active at NIH in training graduate students, with approximately 33 presently pursuing their Ph.D. degrees. The NINDS IRP places emphasis on recruiting and developing exceptional investigators, facilitating outstanding and collaborative neuroscience, enabling translation from bench to bedside, and training the next generation of neuroscientists. A major goal is to continue to recruit outstanding trainees at all levels, continue to build critical mass in clinical training, and to increase racial/ethnic and gender diversity across the program.
