Research in the Integrative Neuroscience Section (INS) probes the neural circuit basis of normal working memory, and characterizes the neural circuit and working memory dysfunction in mouse models of genetic susceptibility to schizophrenia and related disorders. INS members use custom-built devices implanted into the brains of mice to record and manipulate the function of discrete cells and circuits in freely moving mice. INS focuses on understanding the neural computations within, and circuit-level interactions between, the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus of the mouse. All such experiments require the fabrication of precise, miniature, complex and stable components to enable to accurate and reproducible targeting of our recording/manipulation hardware to discrete areas of the mouse brain. The ability to produce such components is required for the research conducted in the INS. The purpose of this acquisition is to acquire a 3D Systems Figure 4 Standalone 3D printer and its associated hardware for high-resolution printing of implantable systems for in vivo electrophysiology studies in behaving mice. This equipment will be critical for the central mission of the INS to study the neural basis of normal and disordered learning and memory processes.
