Rationale/ Salient Characteristics
The NINDS, Stroke Branch, Neurovascular Research Unit requires an optical (anti-vibration) table with retractable casters for the multiphoton microscope system. The optical table must have the salient features listed below:

CLEANTOP TABLE-TOP
1. Bond Strength
High-density core geometry effectively double the total skin-to-core bonding area, correspondingly increasing the total bond strength with steel-to-steel contact at all bond interfaces.
2. Cell Size
Cell size of .49 square inches contributes to the above-mentioned bonding area and also reduces the “drum-head” effect that may result from designs using larger spaces between the core walls.
3. Shear Strength
Core, 18 lbs/ft3 has a shear strength of 275,000 psi.
4. Damping Methods
Broadband damping will generally produce a faster decay of a vibrational or impact force to the table and will not require the damping oils (and their associated risks).
5. Sealed Holes
Sealing cups are welded and bonded to the top skin with a full 1” of bolt clearance, and a total volume of only .06 inches.
6. CleanTop Skins
Top skins are stretcher-leveled, stress-relieved, and pressure-bonded against a
precision-lapped granite plate, without subsequent grinding—avoiding heat and stress. The finished top is flat within ±0.005 in. (0.13 mm) within the entire tapped hole pattern, regardless of top size, guaranteed.
7. Mounting Holes
Mounting holes are in register with open cells in the honeycomb core. This assures that the core is not damaged by subsequent drilling and tapping during manufacture, that the structural integrity of the assembly is maintained, and that all mounting screws can be inserted to full depth without obstruction.
8. Sidewall Construction
Utilizes 0.075 in (2 mm) thick, damped, cold-rolled formed steel for the sidewalls of the optical tables. These strengthening sidewalls are highly damped to eliminate any possible resonance behavior.
9. Thermal Performance
There are two main aspects of thermal performance: Similar material construction (for
even, stress free thermal movement) and maximum thermal conductivity throughout the structure (for fastest stabilization). Being 100% steel, there are no dissimilar materials to introduce thermal stresses, and the steel-to-steel bond contact area maximizes the thermal conductivity through the table for best thermal stabilization times.
10. Rounded Corners
Radius at each of the four corners of the table specified, eliminating the
sharp edges.

GIMBAL PISTONTM VIBRATION ISOLATION SUPPORT LEG SYSTEM
1. Gimbal Piston Isolator Performance
Gimbal Piston Isolators have been shown to exceed the measured vertical and horizontal performance of all competing designs, especially in low load, low amplitude environments.
2. Gimbal Piston Isolator Design
Isolator design allows a thin-wall, rolling diaphragm seal to accommodate horizontal displacement by acting as a gimbal. The Gimbal Piston Isolator carries the load on a separate top plate that has a rigid rod extending down into a well in the main piston. The bottom of the rod has a ball-end that bears on a hard, flat seat. Horizontal motion is simply converted to the usual vertical diaphragm flexure but out of phase: one side of the piston up, the other down, in a gimbal-like motion.
3. Aluminum Height Control Valves
All systems are equipped with rugged aluminum height control valves. Virtually unbreakable, provide finger adjustment with NO need for other tools. Standard Model maintains height to +/- 0.05 in (+/- 1mm) and Precision Model to +/-0.005 in (+/- 0.1 mm).
4. TMC’s Internal Piston Travel Restraints
Internal piston restraints have no external pinch-points, are entirely tamper-proof, and are tested to several times.
5. Retractable Casters
Gimbal Piston vibration isolation system comes standard with damped horizontal tie bars. Each post is connected with tie bars in the upper part of the leg frame, which enables the use of retractable casters. Each post comes with an internal retractable caster, which allows for easy movement of the optical table inside the lab.

Single-Sole Source Determination
Delegated Market research surveyed NIH supply center, Ability one, and GSA/BPA and determined that there are no other sources available to meet the government needs. similar purchase was made in 2021 for the exact same item procured from the same source.
Background/Description of Requirement

PURCHASE DESCRIPTION

  1. Statement of Need and Purpose:

The study of vascular function is central to understand the neurovascular biology. We need non-invasive or minimally invasive techniques to investigate of vascular structure and function of cerebral vasculature. One of the pieces of equipment that will be used for this purpose is a 2 photon microcope.  An optical (anti-vibration) table with retractable casters is required for 2-photon microscope to isolate the system (microscope) from the surroundings vibration noise. This isolation helps in removing any artifacts/noise generated during the imaging session or in general (that includes, but not limited to walking or movements of objects/tanks across the floor).  The optical (anti-vibration) table also serves as a platform for creating an isolation/dark cage around the microscope as all the measurements performed during the imaging sessions are sensitive to light and noise.

  1. Background Information and Objective:

One of the aims in the Neurovascular Research Unit is to perform ex-vivo vascular functions measurement. In order to conduct these experiments, we will use equipment (2-photon microscope) that will need to be placed on an optical (anti-vibration) table to isolate the system (microscope) from the surroundings vibration noise.
