a. LED array, MultiPort assembly with Omnetics, Blackrock Microsystems, 5x5 Green LED array assembly, 24 LEDs, 8cm wire bundle, PN 10517
b. Shipping and handling, PN 8495

The Laboratory of Neuropsychology (LN) in the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) investigates higher brain functions such as object recognition and reward-guided learning. The goal of this project is to investigate relationships between brain areas and behavior. This work will be used to understand the complex neural circuitry that primates use for object recognition. Such understanding is part of the mission of the NIMH. This work requires specific custom flexible LED arrays to manipulate neuronal activity in the nonhuman primate brain via optogenetic receptor activation. In 2018, our lab procured this specific custom flexible LED arrays under POTS# 18-007524.

Single-Sole Source Determination
The LED arrays for optogenetic activation of regions of nonhuman primate brain listed herein is available from only one source, and competition is precluded for the reasons indicated below. There are no substitutes available.

This acquisition is restricted to Blackrock Microsystems, 630 Komas Drive, Suite 200, Salt Lake City, UT 84108, Contact: Kian Torab, Phone: 951-254-2686.

The estimated cost of the required item or service is $25,000 and is required to be delivered within 90 days after receipt of a purchase order.

The essential characteristics of the LED arrays for optogenetic modulation in nonhuman primates that limit the availability to a sole source are: 1) curvature compatible with implantation over perirhinal cortex; 2) precise control and timing of power output; 3) embedded thermal sensor; 4) proven performance for safety in nonhuman primates; and 5) gas sterilizable. Only this suggested source can furnish the requirements, to the exclusion of other sources, because these LED arrays are entirely proprietary – developed in collaboration with our research group for this specific application. Blackrock Microsystems is the only licensed vendor of this product.
Background/Description of Requirement

The purpose of this purchase is to procure an optical stimulation array for implantation in nonhuman primates.

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Laboratory of Neuropsychology investigates fundamental brain functions such as visual object recognition. We seek to understand the circuitry responsible for visual processing. By expanding and refining genetic techniques first used in rodents, our group has developed new tools for nonhuman primates. This purchase will allow us to apply these new optogenetic tools. It will lead to a deeper understanding of the neural circuitry underlying visual processing and provide new insights relevant to psychological health and disorders.
