Oregon Health & Science University

Dennis McCarty is a professor in the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University and a principal investigator for the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Clinical Trials Network (CTN). Through his involvement with the United Nations Office on Drug Control TreatNet program, Dr. McCarty began working with Dr. Fabian Fiestas of the Peruvian National Institute of Health (INS). The two have worked on grant applications to test SBIRT for alcohol use among HIV patients in Peru and arranged for other U.S. investigators to conduct research and train clinicians in Peru. Dr. McCarty was instrumental in facilitating participation by Dr. Fiestas in the CTN Steering Committee Meetings, which led to the recent Binational Agreement between NIDA and INS. Dr. McCarty and colleagues from Vietnam collaborate on an R01 grant investigating buprenorphine use in Vietnam, and he continues to work with the NIDA INVEST fellow he mentored. Dr. McCarty also is scientific director of the Dutch Summer Institute on Alcohol, Drugs and Addiction. The Dutch Summer Institute creates international networking opportunities and trains participants in multidisciplinary approaches to drug policy, prevention, and evidence-based treatment that bridge the gap between research and practice. The NIDA International Program presents the 2014 Award of Excellence in Mentoring to Dennis McCarty for his excellence in mentoring drug abuse researchers around the world.
