Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship for Midcareer Training

NIDA Hubert H. Humphrey Drug Use and Addiction Fellowship

International research and exchange collaborations contribute to advances in scientific understanding about drug use and addiction. To foster these exchanges, NIDA partners with the U.S. Department of State to support a unique, nondegree training program for midcareer professionals. Through the combination of academic courses at a leading U.S. university and a professional affiliation, NIDA Hubert H. Humphrey (Humphrey) Drug Use and Addiction Fellows learn about NIDA-supported drug use and addiction research and the application of research to the development of science-based government policy and prevention and treatment programs. In addition, NIDA facilitates meetings between fellows and grantees to discuss research funding opportunities and to help identify potential partners for cooperative research.

The Humphrey fellowship will enhance fellows’ work by contributing to their understanding of the scientific basis of drug use and addiction. Fellowship alumni and their U.S. mentors form the nucleus of a network of scientists who exchange information and collaborate on drug use and addiction research, treatment, and prevention programming nationally, regionally, and globally.

What Does the Fellowship Include?

The 10-month, midcareer, nondegree fellowship provides:

  • Mentored academic study at a prominent U.S. university.
  • A minimum six-week professional affiliation experience.
  • Additional professional development activities that help you establish connections with NIDA grantees and NIDA officials.
  • Tuition, a stipend for books and living expenses, round-trip travel, health insurance, an allowance to support professional development activities, and participation in the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Global Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C.

Who Is Eligible?

Applicants for the fellowship must:

  • Be currently employed in a midcareer position in a university, nongovernmental organization, government ministry, health care profession, or other drug use and addiction-related occupation where science-based evidence contributes to practice, policy, or program development.
  • Have an earned, four-year (or more) university degree in a relevant field of study such as medicine, public health, or biomedical, behavioral, or social science. (It is recommended that candidates for the NIDA Humphrey Fellowship have a master’s and/or doctoral degree.)
  • Have demonstrated leadership qualities and a record of public service in the community.
  • Have demonstrated proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Have citizenship in a country eligible for the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program, with residency and full-time professional employment in that country for the past five years.

How Should I Apply?

Contact the U.S. Embassy or Fulbright Commission in your home country, or visit the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program website for more information. The NIDA International Program is prepared to work with potential applicants to ensure that adequate numbers of qualified candidates are available to fill capacity at host universities. For advice on preparing a competitive application, please email us at ip@nida.nih.gov.
