NIDA Hubert H. Humphrey Drug Use and Addiction Research Fellowships
International research and exchange collaborations contribute to advances in scientific understanding about drug use and addiction. To foster these exchanges, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) partners with the U.S. Department of State to support a unique training program for midcareer drug use and addiction professionals. Through the combination of academic courses at a leading U.S. university and a professional affiliation with an Institute grantee, NIDA Hubert H. Humphrey (Humphrey) Drug Use and Addiction Research Fellows learn about NIDA-supported drug use and addiction research and the application of research to the development of science-based government policy and prevention and treatment programs.
In addition, NIDA facilitates meetings between fellows and grantees to discuss research funding opportunities and to help identify potential partners for cooperative research to be conducted in the fellows' home countries.
If you are a midcareer drug use and addiction professional and want to gain international experience at a premier U.S. research institution, the NIDA Humphrey Drug Use and Addiction Research Fellowship is just right for you. The fellowship will enhance your work by contributing to your understanding of the scientific basis of drug use and addiction. NIDA Humphrey Drug Use and Addiction Research Fellowship alumni and their U.S. mentors form the nucleus of a network of scientists who exchange information and collaborate on drug use and addiction research nationally, regionally, and globally.
What Does the NIDA Humphrey Drug Use and Addiction Fellowship Include?
The 10-month, midcareer, nondegree fellowship provides:
- Mentored academic study at a preeminent U.S. university.
- A minimum 6-week research affiliation and professional experience with a NIDA-supported scientist.
- Additional professional development activities that help you establish personal relationships with NIDA grantees and NIDA officials who are interested in collaborating with you after you return home.
- Tuition, a stipend for books and living expenses, round-trip travel, health insurance, an allowance to support professional development activities, and participation in the national Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Seminar in Washington, DC.
Who Is Eligible?
The requirements for NIDA Humphrey Drug Use and Addiction Research Fellowship applicants are:
- A midcareer position in a university, nongovernmental organization, government ministry, health care profession, or other drug use and addiction-related occupation where science-based evidence contributes to practice, policy, or program development.
- An earned doctoral degree in medicine, public health, or biomedical, behavioral, or social science. (Candidates with a master's degree and substantial professional or research experience also will be considered.)
- A demonstrated commitment to leadership and public service.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English.
- Citizenship in a country eligible for the Humphrey Drug Use and Addiction Research Fellowship, with residency and employment in that country for the past 5 years.
