Patient decision aids can improve patient knowledge and engagement in medical decision making and have shown success in ED settings for patients presenting with various ailments (e.g. chest pain and pain management) and have had positive effects on MOUD initiation in outpatient addiction treatment settings. However, a patient decision aid has not been developed for the treatment of ED patients with OUD. This proposal aims to address a critical need to develop and test a patient decision aid for ED-initiated buprenorphine to improve informed decision making and use of evidenced-based treatment. This study aims to 1) develop a patient decision aid (PtDA-EDBup)through an iterative process by incorporating the best scientific evidence available on ED-initiated buprenorphine, as well as feedback via interviews with patients, ED-based peer recovery specialists, and emergency medicine and addiction clinicians; 2) assess feasibility and acceptability through pilot testing of PtDA-EDBup; 3) examine changes in knowledge about MOUD, stigma related to MOUD, and readiness for buprenorphine before and after PtDA-EDBup use; and 4) measure any changes in patient decision making before and after PtDA-EDBup use.
