NIDA supports cohort studies of critical populations at the intersection of substance abuse disorder and HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases. There are currently nine cohorts working with more than 12,000 diverse participants that represent a broad cross-section of patients across the country. The detail and depth of the data resulting from these longitudinal studies, some of which began in the late 1980s, allow NIDA and the HIV Research Program to track trends and support research priorities that will have the greatest impact on the field.
The U01 cohorts are supported by the Collaborating Consortium of Cohorts Producing NIDA Opportunities (C3PNO), a coordinating center managed by UCLA and Frontier Science. C3PNO’s team of researchers works with the various cohort principal investigators and NIDA program scientists to align research priorities, facilitate collaboration between cohorts and NIDA, and organize in-person conferences to highlight successes and address challenges.
The table below provides an overview of the current NIDA U01 Cohort Studies.
