The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the World Health Organization (WHO), the University of Miami, and the College on Problems of Drug Dependence (CPDD) support an International Travel Award for two drug abuse-related public health researchers from low- or middle-income countries to participate in the NIDA International Forum, the CPDD Annual Scientific Meeting, and associated research training activities. As part of the award, NIDA and University of Miami funds support a research visit to a U.S.-based research institution.
Eligibility
- Be an investigator from a low- or middle-income country with primary research activities related to drug use and drug use disorders who completed his or her doctoral degree or residency no more than 10 years ago.
- Conduct research on public health aspects of drug use and drug use disorders (such as epidemiology, public health policies, prevention, health services, treatment options, and systems).
- Have not received travel support from NIDA, WHO, University of Miami, or CPDD between July 1 of the previous year and June 1 of the award year.
- Have not previously received the WHO/NIDA/CPDD International Traveling Fellowship or the CPDD International Committee Travel Award in any prior year.
- Live and work outside the United States at the time of application and travel.
- Provide eligible abstracts for the two meetings.
Abstracts
Applicants are required to submit an abstract to both the NIDA International Forum and the CPDD Annual Scientific Meeting using the two meetings’ separate online submission systems. Abstract submission for the two meetings usually opens November 1. Winners are not eligible for the CPDD best poster award for the NIDA International Forum in the award year. Priority will be given to applications by the first author on the abstract submitted, but the committee will consider competitive applications from qualified individuals who are the second author on the abstract submitted.
Note: CPDD requires that a CPDD member sponsor a research abstract submitted by a nonmember. The Chair of the CPDD International Committee, Clyde B. McCoy, Ph.D., University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, United States, has agreed to sponsor abstract submissions by international researchers who are not CPDD members.
Applications Must Include:
- Abstract Submission Confirmation from CPDD
- Abstract Submission Confirmation from the NIDA International Forum
- A curriculum vitae documenting research experience
- Two letters of recommendation indicating your eligibility for the award
- A travel plan for visiting a U.S.-based research institution before or after the CPDD Annual Meeting, which describes the potential for future collaborative research between the applicant and the institution
- A letter of acceptance from the director of the research unit you wish to visit
- A conflict of interest statement that complies with CPDD policy.
Applications must be submitted via email. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
The NIDA International Program will coordinate travel arrangements after the awards are announced. Each travel award of $5,000 USD will help offset expenses incurred while attending the meetings and associated research visit, including such items as CPDD meeting registration fees, travel, and living expenses. The award also includes registration fees to the CPDD meeting for the 2 consecutive years following the award year.
Award selection will be announced February 17, 2017.
