The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs are NIDA's engine of innovation for developing and commercializing novel technologies and products to prevent, diagnose, and treat substance use disorders. In 2019, NIDA Director Dr. Nora Volkow highlighted the SBIR/STTR programs in her blog.
The small business program at NIDA is managed and administered by the Office of Translational Initiatives and Program Innovations (OTIPI). OTIPI’s portfolio includes projects with companies developing pharmacotherapeutics, FDA-regulated therapeutic and diagnostic devices, mobile health and general wellness products, research tools, health IT, and education/training-focused products and services. NIDA continues to expand its portfolio and source new ideas and technologies that can be translated into innovations for addiction science. NIDA also offers resources to enable and empower the entrepreneurial journey for both new and established small businesses.
