Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research (Diversity Supplement Program)
Program Contact: Angela Holmes, Ph.D.
NIDA participates in the National Institutes of Health diversity supplement program by funding administrative supplements to selective active NIDA grants in order to improve the diversity of the research workforce by recruiting and supporting students, postdoctorates, and eligible investigators from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups demonstrated to be underrepresented in the biomedical, behavioral, clinical and social sciences. NIDA strongly encourages all diversity supplement recipients to apply for independent funding support within the first two years of being supported by the diversity supplement as one goal of the program is to foster their career trajectory towards independent substance use research. Administrative supplements must support work within the scope of the original project.

Note: Grants supported under the NIH Helping End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) initiatives and grants supported under the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) program are now offering Diversity Supplements to provide support that will help launch the careers of underrepresented scientists in addiction research. HEAL awardees must apply to PA-23-189 through the NOSI, NOT-NS-20-107. BRAIN awardees must apply to PA-23-189 through the NOSI, NOT-AA-23-020.
NIDA Diversity Supplement Program
Feeder Program and Bridge to Independent Funding
Goal
- Enhance the diversity of the addiction research workforce by recruiting and retaining postbaccalaureate, pre-doctorate, post-doctorate, and junior investigators from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups demonstrated to be underrepresented in the biomedical, behavioral, clinical and social sciences.
Approach
- Administrative supplements to existing NIH research grants
- Typically 2-3 years of funding to provide ‘bridge funds’ while the trainee gains the research experience, preliminary data, and other needed training to apply for independent grant funding
- Supplements provide salary, fringe benefits, funds for supplies and travel
Follow-up/Support
- Two-day grant application and professional development workshop
- Connect with ODHD staff & POs, and receive individualized feedback
- Additional Travel Award Opportunities
- Peer to peer support
- Feeder program to Diversity Fs and Ks and other NIH mechanisms
- Program Evaluation and Analysis
NIDA Office of Diversity and Health Disparities (ODHD) Diversity Supplement Workshop
Program Contact: Angela Holmes, Ph.D.
Each year NIDA ODHD convenes a two-day Diversity Supplement and Professional Development Workshop, to bring together diversity supplement scholars (at the undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, master’s (degree holders and students) pre-doctoral, postdoctoral, and early career investigator levels) from over 20 National Institutes of Health (NIH) Institutes. The purpose of this workshop is to provide opportunities for scholars to meet NIH Program Staff, help to demystify the NIH grant and review process, and provide an overview of relevant funding mechanisms. In addition, scholars will have the opportunity to present their research at a poster session, network with other scholars, and hear from past diversity supplement scholars about how they secured independent grant support and transitioned to the next career stage.
Achieving independent funding such as a fellowship, career development award, or another grant can be an important step in one’s career. This workshop provides the necessary information and network-building opportunities to help workshop participants with that process.
